What a difference a game can make. The Ave Maria baseball team looked like a different team on Friday night compared to the team that took the field during the program opener on Tuesday.
The Gyrenes swept a doubleheader from fellow NAIA school Calumet College of St. Joseph (Indiana) by identical 11-1 scores at Veterans Community Park.
In Game 1 for the Gyrenes, the number two, three, and four-hole hitters paced the offense collecting six of the nine AMU hits. Brian Trymbiski, Carlos Padron and Trace McDermott each collected two hits and an RBI for the Gyrenes as well as scored six of the eleven AMU runs. Trymbiski and McDermott each had a double and Gabe Loweree also collected a run scoring triple. Cody Muren, from the leadoff spot in the order, set the table for the home team scoring three runs. Stephen Ori (1-0) collected the win on the mound for Ave Maria, throwing five strong innings, giving up four hits and striking out six CCSJ hitters.
Game 2 was more of the same for the Gyrenes. Marcus Colon picked up in Game 2 where Ori left off in game 1. Colon (1-0) picked up his first career college victory on the mound throwing four innings of one hit ball, while striking out two. Offensively for Ave Maria, Joey Schulte went 3-3 at the plate, while also driving in 3 runs. Gabe Loweree also drove in three runs from the leadoff spot with a bases loaded double that cleared the bases. Senior Chris Suchomski and freshman Trace McDermott each added two RBI as well for Ave Maria University.
The Gyrenes improved to 2-1 on the season while Calumet College of St. Joseph falls to 0-2. Both teams will complete the four game series with a doubleheader Saturday at 12 noon at St. John Neumann High School in Naples.
