Gyrenes win 6-0 and 6-5 on Saturday.
Justin James set the tone from his first pitch during the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. James (1-0) commanded his fastball for strikes and scattered four hits over seven innings, while striking out six Crimson Wave hitters and only walking one.
Offensively, Carlos Padron got the Gyrenes on the board in the third inning with the first homerun in school history on a blast to left field. Padron scored two runs in the game. Alex Sanchez led Ave Maria at the plate with two hits in three plate appearances. The Gyrenes stole five bases in game one with Brian Trymbiski collecting two stolen bases.
Game two on Saturday was a nail biter. Nolan Luyk collected a no-decision, tossing five innings, giving up four hits, one unearned run while striking out five hitters and walking one. The Gyrenes stayed aggressive on the bases, picking up five more stolen bases with Gabe Loweree collecting two to lead the Gyrenes. Joey Schulte and Justin Repullo each collected two hits for Ave Maria, with Schulte adding two RBI.
The Crimson Wave rallied from a 4-0 deficit to eventually take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Repullo lead the seventh inning off with a single up the middle and was advanced to second on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt off the bat of Alex Sanchez. With one out, lone Gyrene senior Chris Suchomski laced a line drive to right-centerfield to score Repullo from second. Suchomski stole second base and Matt McKay was walked to set the dramatic ending for freshman Trace McDermott. McDermott hit a ground ball to second base and McKay was forced out at second base, but the throw from the shortstop to complete the double play eluded the Crimson Wave first baseman which allowed Suchomski to score from second.
Ave Maria improves to 4-1 on the season while Calumet College of St. Joseph drops to (0-4). Ave Maria takes to the diamond again on Tuesday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. contest in Opa Locka, Florida versus Florida Memorial University, and a 7:00 p.m. contest in Miami Lakes, Florida versus St. Thomas University.
