Ave Maria University scored six runs in the first inning Tuesday night to help lead them to a 9-5 victory over Webber International.
Gabe Loweree (FR, El Paso, TX) opened the first inning with a triple to right center and was promptly driven home by Brian Trymbiski (JR, Doylestown, PA), on a single to right field. The Gyrenes then took advantage of two Warrior errors, one walk and three hit batsmen to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
After Webber had cut the lead to 6-3 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning, the Gyrenes struck again as Loweree drew a one out walk, Trymbiski followed with a single to right and Carlos Padron (FR, Miami, FL) hit his second homerun of the year on a ball that hugged the leftfield foul pole. The Gyrenes were led by Trymbiski, who went 3-3 and Chris Suchomski (SR, Spring Grove, IL), and Padron who each had two hits on the night, while Padron knocked in three runs. Trace McDermott (FR, Park Ridge, NJ) stole two bases for AMU.
The Gyrenes used a pitching staff by committee to help calm the Warrior bats. Nolan Luyk (JR, Caledonia, MI) threw the first four innings, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out four. Marcus Colon (FR, Lake Worth, FL) picked up the win on the mound throwing 2 1/3 innings of relief work to improve to 2-0 on the year. Nick Keuler (FR, Savannah, GA) entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out. Keuler got a ground ball to shortstop to collect a force at second and a fly out to rightfield to stifle the Warrior rally. Tom Bracht saw his first action on the mound this season. He pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to complete the victory.
Ave Maria improves to 5-1 on the season, while Webber International drops to 2-2. The Gyrenes take to the diamond on Saturday February 6th for a doubleheader against Florida Memorial University, with first pitch scheduled for noon on the campus of St. John Neumann High School in Naples, FL. Saturday is “Pack the Park Day” as the Gyrenes are hoping for a large and loud Ave Maria crowd.
