Travis Isensee (FR, Ft. Myers, FL) collected his third hit during the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader with a seventh inning leadoff, walk off homerun to give the Gyrenes a 10-9 victory.
The Gyrenes fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of the second game, but Gabe Loweree (FR, El Paso, TX) put Ave Maria on the board with a leadoff homerun to leftfield. The Gyrenes added a run in the third inning when Justin Repullo (SO, Ft. Myers, FL) lined a single into the gap in right centerfield to drive in Brian Trymbiski (JR, Doylestown, PA) who lead the inning off with a single.
The Gyrenes struck big in the fourth inning by playing a little small ball. Shanell Santiago (FR, Miramar, FL), Alex Sanchez (FR, Hialeah, FL) and Loweree hit back-to-back-to-back singles to help set the table for Carlos Padron (FR, Miami, FL) and Repullo to drive runs in with back to back singles.
After the Lions tied the game with a four run sixth inning, the Gyrenes struck back with a two out Matt McKay (FR, Logansport, IN) single to right field that drove in Padron, who reached hit a one out double off the top of the centerfield fence. After the Lions scored to tie the games on an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, Isensee sent the loud and supportive Gyrene crowd home happy. Loweree collected two hits and two RBI, Padron went 4-4 with two doubles, and Repullo went 2-2 with three RBI to help pace the offense.
Tom Bracht (SO, Middletown, PA) picked up the win in relief for the Gyrenes, pitching an inning and giving up an unearned run.
Game one for the Gyrenes was not as much fun as the second. Trace McDermott (FR, Park Ridge, NJ) led the offense with two hits and Cody Muren (FR, Jacksonville, FL) hit a solo homerun to leadoff the seventh inning. Stephen Ori (JR, Irving, TX) took the loss on the bump for Ave Maria to even his record at 1-1.
Ave Maria is now 6-2 for the year, while Florida Memorial is 1-1. AMU returns to the yard on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 pm for a single nine inning game against Webber International University.
