The Ave Maria University Baseball Team lost a close battle with NCAA Division II Nova Southeastern University on the road. The Gyrenes were down 2-0 until the eighth inning when Tom Bracht lined a 2 RBI double to left center. Nova took the game in the bottom of the ninth when Dusty Maggs hit a leadoff homerun to end the game.
The Sharks, who have won 15 of their last 16 home games, are now 24-15 while AMU is now 17-19. Gyrenes' starting pitcher, Stephen Ori, was stellar on the mound. The Texas right-hander allowed just 2 runs over eight innings and induced 3 ground ball double plays. He gave up 6 hits while striking out 7. Nolan Luyk came in to relief Ori in the ninth inning, but received the loss.
The Gyrenes had trouble getting the offense going against NSU starter Chris Hamper. AMU was limited to just 3 hits and no runs over the first six innings. AMU eventually would score in the eighth inning off Sharks' reliever Sean Tighe. Trace McDermott singled to right field and Shanell Santiago walked to set up Bracht's 2 RBI double to tie the game.
Bracht, Carlos Padron, Pete Lesniewski, Cody Muren, and Trace McDermott each had a hit in the game. AMU returns to action in Miami, Florida at St. Thomas University April 7th. The single game matchup begins at 6 p.m. AMU looks to avenge a 9-1 loss to STU in their last meeting on March 30th.
