The Ave Maria University Baseball Team brought down the Thomas University Night Hawks in Thomasville, Georgia Friday night 7-3.
The Night Hawks (NAIA) are undefeated in the Association of Independent Institutions and have made the playoffs this season. Their record fell to 29-15 with the loss to AMU.
The Gyrenes, now 21-22, play a doubleheader at Thomas today if the weather permits. The doubleheader versus TU will conclude the first ever season for the Gyrenes baseball program.
Last night, under the lights of Varnedoe Stadium, Gyrene starting pitcher Nolan Luyk (4-3) was spectacular. The junior from Michigan threw a complete-game to earn his fourth win. Luyk struck out 6 Night Hawk hitters while walking none. He allowed just 3 runs to the strong Night Hawk offense, and struck out all three batters in the ninth inning.
The Gyrenes roughed up Thomas University starter Kurtis Mancauskas for 6 runs on 10 hits. Carlos Padron set the tempo for the Gyrenes as he hit two homeruns in the game. His first shot was a blast that sailed well over the left field fence. He now has 8 homeruns this year; two of them being grand slams. Padron leads the team with 42 runs batted in, 84 total bases, and a .596 slugging percentage.
Freshman Gabe Loweree was 2 for 5 from the leadoff spot in the order. He hit his team-leading 18th double of the season. Pete Lesniewski continued his hot bat with a 2 for 4, 2 RBI performance, and freshman shortstop Alex Sanchez went 3 for 5. Third baseman Trace McDermott was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
