Four Gyrene baseball players attended the Sun Conference All-Star Game held at Embry-Riddle University’s Silwa Stadium in Daytona, Florida. AMU played a huge role in the South’s 11-6 victory over the North.

The game, held annually before each team’s regular season begins, is a contest for juniors and seniors to showcase their talents in front of major league scouts. The conference is split up into a North and South division and players are selected by their respective coaches to represent their teams.

The North team consisted of players from Webber International, Embry-Riddle, SCAD Savannah, Southeastern and South Carolina Beaufort while the South team was made up of players from St. Thomas, Florida Memorial, Warner, Northwood and Ave Maria.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the North scored 2 runs to take the early lead. However, in the top of the fifth, AMU’s Pete Lesniewski led off the inning with a double down the left field line. He scored the first run for the North squad. AMU’s Patrick Collins-Bride tied the game at 2 when he singled in a run later that same inning. Lesniewski finished 1-2 at the plate with a double and run scored. Collins-Bride ended the day 1-2 at the plate with a run batted in and a stolen base.

Gyrene catcher, Brian Trymbiski, opened eyes at the plate. He ripped a 2 RBI double in the game and also hit a sacrifice fly. His 3 runs batted in led the South squad that day.

AMU starting pitcher, Justin James, pitched the 8th, 9th, and 10th innings for the South. He entered with a lead and wasted little time shutting the door on the North squad. James got Embry-Riddle’s Chris Page to line into a double play to end the game. He commanded his pitches and finished without allowing a run.

The standout performances for Ave Maria are the beginning of what looks to be an exciting year for the Gyrene baseball team. This year the Gyrenes will play their home games at the newly constructed Bowie’s Ballpark located on campus adjacent to the school’s softball and football fields. Fans are welcome to join the Gyrenes at their opening games this Friday. AMU will face Calumet College of St. Joseph in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. Games begin both days at 12 noon.
