Entering his fourth season as head men’s basketball coach at Ave Maria, Jamon Copeland has watched his Gyrenes improve their winning total for each of the last three years. He has also guided them to 23 victories over nationally ranked teams in the first three years of the startup program's existence.
Last season, Copeland led the Gyrenes to a program record 18 victories and a third place finish at the USCAA National Tournament. In 2010-11, Copeland led to Gyrenes to16 victories and a national runner-up finish in the USCAA National Tournament. In 2009-10, his first year at Ave Maria and the program's first year in existence, Copeland led the Gyrenes to a fourth place Sun Conference finish, finishing behind three nationally ranked teams. Ave Maria finished the year with a 14 victories while also defeating three Top 25 teams in the country.
Copeland came to Ave Maria after serving three seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas State University. During his tenure at Texas State, Copeland helped sign seven Top-40 high school players in the state of Texas and helped the Bobcats improve their win totals in each of those seasons.
Prior to his stint at Texas State, Copeland was an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Trinity Valley Community College. On the men’s side, Copeland worked for Hall of Fame coach Leon Spencer, who has the most all-time wins (809) in Texas junior college history. On the women’s side he worked for the nationally-ranked and five-time NJCAA National Champion women’s team who were Region XIV champions and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament that year.
Copeland joined the Trinity Valley staff from Keller Central High School, where he served as an assistant coach and history teacher during the 2004-05 academic year.
In addition to his basketball coaching experience, Copeland spent one year as a strength and conditioning coach in the Austrian Professional Football League with the Amstetten Thunderbolts in 2003.
In all, Copeland’s coaching career has included stints as an assistant at the professional, NCAA Division I, junior college, and high school levels. He has also coached eight players who have gone on to professional basketball careers.
The Coppell, Texas, native earned his bachelor’s degree from Franciscan University in 2004 and his master’s degree in Health and Human Performance from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2011. He is also a Crossfit Level 1 Trainer and has attended the Crossfit Olympic Lifting Trainer Course.
Copeland and his wife Jessica reside in Ave Maria with their sons Corban and Blaise.
