• 2009-10 - Assistant Coach

Luke Niewald begins his third season as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Ave Maria University.  Last season, Niewald helped the Gyrenes achieve a school record 16 victories, including 6 wins over Top 25 teams in the country, and a runner up finish at the USCAA National Tournament.  Niewald, in his first season at Ave Maria, helped lead the Gyrenes to a fourth place finish in the Sun Conference, finishing behind three nationally ranked teams.   

Niewald, a native of Kansas, comes to Ave Maria after serving as an assistant coach and head coach at his alma mater, St. John’s High School (Beloit, Kansas). In his first season as head coach, Niewald led the Blue Jays to a 17-7 record and a Pike Trail Conference Championship for the third straight season. In addition, he also led them to the Regional Championship game and the Kansas Sub State Tournament.

Niewald played collegiate basketball for Mike Jeffers at Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, Kansas) in the highly competitive Jayhawk Conference.

Niewald and his wife Amy reside in Ave Maria with their six children: Benedict, Sebastian, Scholastica, Athanasius, Magnus and Gemma.
