Tyler Cutrer and Saira Morgan have been selected as Ave Maria University's male and female athletes of the week for the week ending 12-06-09.
Cutrer and the men's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak to jump above .500. They defeated Florida College 87-61 with the help of Cutrer's hot shooting. Saira Morgan and the Lady Gyrenes were unable to defeat the visiting Flagler College Saints despite solid performances by Carey Fullilove and Saira Morgan. The women were defeated 64-54 by the NCAA division II Institution.
Cutrer, a freshman from Frisco, Texas, led all scorers with 16 points in just 12 minutes played because of foul trouble. He fouled out of the game early in the second half, but was on fire as he walked away. He shot 60 percent from the field, and was 3-6 in three point land. He also contributed 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Morgan, a senior from Anamosa, Iowa, scored 12 points with 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also chipped in with an assist and 2 steals. She is averaging over 6 rebounds per game this season. Morgan had to make a quick transition from the volleyball team which concluded its season just one day before the basketball season began.
