by Eddie Anderson

The Ave Maria University Men's Basketbal Team traveled to Lakeland, Florida to take on the NCAA Division II Florida Southern Moccasins in an exhibition game.

The Mocs, who are ranked #3 nationally in the NCAA's Division II poll, won the game 88-57. The Mocs are the first Division II program that AMU has faced in its short, two-year history.

AMU scored first in the game. However, Florida Southern then scored the next 14 points to go ahead 14-2. They would continue to build on their lead and were up 55-32 at the half. Orlando, Florida native Kiel Lewis came off the bench to lead AMU with 15 points. The freshman dished out 5 assists and made 3 steals. Lewis shot a perfect 6 of 6 from the floor.

As a team, the Gyrenes shot 31 percent while the Mocassins cashed in 46 percent of their shots. Chris Scanlan had 8 points for AMU. Dylan Fugate and Jimmy Torney each chipped in with 6.

Florida Southern's Brandon Jenkins and Damon Ellison lead all scorers in the game with 16 each. Terry Jenkins and Rion Rayfield each bucketed 11 points for the Mocs.

The Gyrenes remain at 5-4 overall, and will play again on December 19th at home. The game will be played at 3 p.m. versus The Sun Conference opponent Southeastern University.
