Ave Maria scored 21 points off of Warner University turnovers in the first half, and built an enormous 57-35 lead entering halftime. However, the final score was very surprising with the Royals returning the favor in the second half of play to get within 2 points before the final buzzer. Every basket proved to be pivotal in the 84-82 Gyrene win. Warner University is currently ranked #22 nationally in NAIA Division II competition.
AMU starters Kiel Lewis, Jimmy Torney, and Dylan Fugate combined to score 41 of the Gyrenes' 57 first half points. Lewis finished with 21 pts., 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Jimmy Torney ended with 20 pts. on 9-15 shooting. Dylan Fugate had 17 pts. with 6 rebounds. Fugate shot 4-8 behind the arc.
Chris Scanlan scored 9 points off the bench on 4 for 6 shooting that included a three-pointer. Forward Colin Voreis went 3 for 5 to total 8 pts. on the night. With the victory AMU improved to 10-13 overall and 4-7 in league play. Warner slipped to 16-7 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
The Gyrenes continue their road trip tomorrow when they visit Warner's neighbor, Webber International University, for a 7 p.m. Sun Conference contest. GO GYRENES!
