In their first regular season game, the Ave Maria University Men's Soccer team was victorious, winning 3-2.
Freshman Miguel Vera set the tempo, scoring the first goal of the game on an assist from fellow freshman Jose Jimenez. The College of the Bahamas, however, would answer three minutes later on a goal by Lesly St. Fleur tying the game at one. The College of the Bahamas took the lead when Stephen Davies placed one in the net. Just two minutes after Davies' goal, Jose Jimenez evened the score again with Vera getting the assist this time. The score was 2-2 at the end of the first half.
The game was played with two forty minute halves instead of the usual forty-five because of lightning in the area, and after a ten minute halftime break the second half was underway. Sophomore Carlos Fuentes, with Vera's second assist of the game, sent a tough shot into the College of the Bahamas' net to put the Gyrenes up 3-2. The Gyrenes had good timing as this was the last goal of the game, happening just four minutes before all of the lights went out on the field. Thus, forcing the game to end.
AMU will be back in action August 28, 2009 when they take on the Savannah College of Art and Design in a conference matchup. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Ave Maria University.
