The March for Life drew approximately 300,000 people this year, which is a testament to the strength of the Pro-Life cause: that all human life must be respected from conception until natural death. People travelled from all over the country to participate in the March, sacrificing time and effort to stand up for their beliefs.
For the Ave Maria University Men’s Tennis team, a 1,000 mile trip to Washington D.C. was no obstacle in attending the 2011 March for Life. Of the six-man squad, four drove through the night and up the coast to reach DC. The drive took them seventeen hours. Junior Matthew Vicinanzo commented: “At around hour fifteen my leg was falling asleep and I didn’t know if we were going to make it, but I guess we pulled through.”
Attending the March is no new occurrence for the foursome. This marked Matthew’s third year attending the March. Junior Anselm Karas has attended the last seven marches, and Junior Alex Pince has made the trip with Ave Maria for the last three years. Freshman David Haub travelled from his home in Illinois twice before marching with Ave Maria this year.
Like all those who made the prayerful walk from the Capitol Mall to the U.S. Supreme Court Building, the men possess a firm belief in the cause. In the words of Anselm Karas, a former brother with the Canon Regular of St. John Cantius: “All lives are precious and must be saved because they are children of God”. Matthew Vicinanzo echoed these sentiments by saying that “the Pro-life movement is about true appreciation for every life, because nothing is greater than a human person; nothing is greater than a human life.”
As the team is back in Florida preparing for a match against Palm Beach Atlantic University this weekend, thoughts revert back to the March for Life. Leo Duval, one member of the team who could not go to Washington because of financial duress, said that “I really hope to go next year. My thoughts and prayers went out to those who attended.” Perhaps one day it will not be necessary to travel to Washington in January. Maybe the battle will be over. Until then, it’s time to hit the courts, and when the time comes, make the drive.
