The Ave Maria University Baseball Team defeated Valley Forge Christian College 14-4 in Lakeland, Florida. The game, played at Southeastern University, was shortened to 6 innings as the Gyrenes went ahead by 10 runs.
AMU was winning 4-3 when freshman Edgardo Balentine led off the fourth inning with a single to start the rally for the Gyrenes. After Travis Isensee reached on an error by Valley Forge's third baseman, Gabe Loweree hit him in with an RBI single up the middle. Tom Bracht reached first base on a walk and Brian Trymbiski followed with a hit to left field. AMU hitters took advantage of several Valley Forge defensive errors to score 6 unearned runs. With 2 outs, Pete Lesniewski smacked a 2 RBI single to score Matt McKay and Alex Sanchez. Then, Lesniewski scored on Balentine's second hit of the inning, a RBI double over the center fielder.
AMU was solid on defense throughout the game without making an error. Starter Chris Suchomski received the win after throwing 4 innings while giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. He struck out 5 batters and walked just two. Leo Suarez was stellar in 2 innings of relief. The lefty did not allow a hit while striking out two and walking one.
The Gyrene offense was led by Gabe Loweree, Brian Trymbiski, and Edgardo Balentine as each had 2 hits and a RBI in the game. Tom Bracht went 1 for 2 with a RBI. Pete Lesniewski went 1 for 2 with two RBI, and Carlos Padron had a hit with 3 RBI.
Ave Maria evened their record at 9-9 overall. They play again at 7 p.m. against Cincinnati Christian on Southeastern University's campus in Lakeland, Florida.
