Ave Maria University’s Men’s Basketball Team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to take part in the Atlanta Christian College Classic last weekend. In their first game of the tournament the Gyrenes came up just short in a thrilling game versus Atlanta Christian College; 87-83. Kiel Lewis led the Gyrenes with 21 points and 4 steals. AMU received excellent efforts from Dylan Fugate (16 points, 9 rebounds), and Jimmy Torney (15 points 10 rebounds). The Gyrenes maintained a lead for the majority of the game, but when Jimmy Torney fouled out late in the second half, the ACC attack proved to be too much for Ave Maria down the stretch.
The Gyrenes rebounded very well in their second game beating the Toccoa Falls College Eagles 95-57. Ave Maria was once again lead by Kiel Lewis with 19 points and Dylan Fugate’s 19 points with 8 rebounds. Mike Coyle added 11 points and 7 rebounds to round out a very balanced Gyrene scoring effort. All members of the AMU squad saw minutes as the game was never really in question. The Gyrenes built a sizeable lead from the beginning and never looked back.
Head coach Jamon Copeland had this to say about his team’s performances: “As a coach, there are losses that you can live with and losses that you can’t. The Atlanta Christian loss was one that is a little easier to stomach because of how hard our guys played. We defended extremely well in the Toccoa Falls game. They shoot the three extremely well and I thought we did a really good job of taking their strength away tonight.”
The Gyrene’s next game is on the road versus Flagler College on November 18th. The game will start at 7 p.m. at Flagler's Gym in St. Augustine, Florida. They return home for their first game inside their new home gym, the Tom Golisano Field House, on Nov. 20th to take on Trinity College in a 1 p.m. matchup. The Gyrenes defeated Trinity earlier this year in a 106-66 road win.
