The Ave Maria University Gyrenes fell to 13-12 overall and 2-9 in The Sun Conference following Monday night's loss to #25 Warner University.
The Royals jumped to a 6-0 lead to begin the game, but the Gyrenes fought back to hold a 31-25 lead at halftime. After the half, Ave Maria went on to lead by as much as 16 points (45-29) when Akii Dean stole the ball from Warner's Brian De Leon and passed it to Kiel Lewis for the fastbreak layup with 14:03 left to play.
Ave Maria was dealt a heavy dose of misfortune later in the half when the Royals came back to force an overtime as Ian Wilhelm nailed a contested three-point attempt with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. The Royals outscored the Gyrenes 15-8 in overtime to go on to win 73-66 at the Golisano Field House. Ave Maria fell to 13-12, TSC 2-9 while the #25 ranked Royals improved to 18-8, TSC 7-5.
Sophomore Akii Dean led all scorers in the first half with nine points and would later go on to score 16 throughout the game. He shot 5-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 behind the arc, and a perfect 3-of-3 at the line. Dean finished with three boards, two steals, and five assists. Junior Kiel Lewis led all players with 18 points. Lewis ended the night with four rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
Forward Dylan Fugate reached double-digits with 12 points and four rebounds, while teammate Matt Chattin scored nine points with a team-high seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Ian Wilhelm led Warner University with 14 points and six rebounds.
The Gyrenes travel to #23 Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida on February 9th for a 7 p.m. conference game.
