The Ave Maria University softball team opened its 2012 season at NCAA Division II Eckerd College on Saturday with a doubleheader. The Lady Tritons took Game One 7-2 before winning Game Two 3-2 to complete the sweep.

In the first game, Megan Manos led the Lady Gyrenes in batting with a 2-for-3 performance that included a run batted in. Krista Wells, Victoria Thompson, and Alex Campbell each collected a hit in the game. Beth Vaccarezza took the loss on the mound.

Ave Maria jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game Two when Janet Holtfreter crushed a homerun with Liz Baux on base. Samantha Crews held the Lady Tritons scoreless over five innings, but Eckerd scored a run in the sixth and tacked on two more in the final inning to go on to win 3-2 at the Turley Complex in St. Petersburg.  

Crews threw 6.2 innings allowing three runs. She struck out three and walked none.

The Lady Gyrenes will dust themselves off and travel to the Pasco-Hernando Tournament on February 11th before returning home on February 15th for a 3 p.m. doubleheader versus Palm Beach State.
