The women's basketball team continued to dominate its conference opponents with a pair of road victories over Warner University and Webber International University. On Friday, the NAIA #23 Lady Gyrenes defeated Warner 66-46 before following up with a 69-41 win over Webber International on Saturday.
The recent wins improve their record within The Sun Conference to 8-1. They currently share the conference lead with St. Thomas University, and are set to eventually host STU on February 18th. The Lady Gyrenes (21-4) boast a better overall record than STU (18-5), but final regular season bragging rights may come down to February 18th's finale at the Tom Golisano Field House.
At Warner, the Lady Gyrenes took a 27-23 halftime lead and ignited in the second half to outscore the Royals 39-23 in the final half to rout the Lady Royals on their home floor 66-46. Sandy Jenkins scored a game-leading 19 points with 17 rebounds to silence the Lady Royals, while teammates Emily Huber and Erika Derks finished with 16 and 12 points respectively.
Amy Myler has played a crucial role in Ave Maria's strong defense throughout the season. She limited Warner's leading scorer, Shawnelle Campbell, to just 4-of-16 shooting from the field on Friday while collecting 13 rebounds. Versus, Webber International, coach Bob Batson commented, "Amy was everywhere against Webber. She guarded their top player who had a double-double the night before and held her to one point." Myler finished Saturday's game with three points, 13 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and two blocks. AMU won the game 69-41.
Sandy Jenkins led Ave Maria in scoring with 18 points, and gathered ten boards, three blocks, and two steals. Jenkins is a high candidate to receive conference player of the week honors having scored 37 combined points with 27 combined rebounds for the weekend. Emily Huber finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals at Webber.
AMU travels to Northwood University on February 10th for a 6 p.m. game in West Palm Beach, Florida. Northwood is third in the conference standings with a 7-15, TSC 5-3 record.
