A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Gibson moved to Southwest Florida in 1984 to join The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla., as an editor. He started fastpitch at Ave Maria University in late 2008 as an informal club program.

Besides his roles as Ave Maria softball coach and newspaper editor, he also is the staff adviser to the Eagle News, the student newspaper at Florida Gulf Coast University in San Carlos Park, Fla.

A 1976 graduate of Kent State University in Ohio and 1972 graduate of South Hills Catholic High School (now Seton LaSalle) in Pittsburgh, he and his wife, Debbie, also a newspaper editor, live in Cape Coral and have four adult children. Before joining the athletics mission at Ave Maria University, Gibson was head coach of the Lee County Rage and Cape Coral Lightning fastpitch travel teams and an assistant coach at North Fort Myers High School. All told, he has coached softball and baseball in Southwest Florida at all age levels for 22 years.
