Signing to play with the Lady Gyrenes for their inaugural season in 2009-10 are Kristin Lange, a graduate of Gulf Coast High School in Naples who now lives in Lake City; and Samantha Crews, a graduate of Port Charlotte High School.
Lange, a former Naples resident who spent last year as a softball coach at St. Francis Catholic High School in Gainesville, returns to the field as a student athlete. She was an All-Florida shortstop at Gulf Coast High, batting .543 her senior year, and attended Pfieffer University in North Carolina on a softball scholarship before injuries her freshman year temporarily put her playing career on hold.
Crews was an All-Area player at Port Charlotte High as the Pirates' No. 1 pitcher. She won 12 games her senior season with an 0.89 earned run average, and finished her scholastic career with a 40-24 record and 0.95 ERA.
Women's softball becomes one of nine intercollegiate sports at the university in Collier County east of Naples, which is an NAIA affiliate and member of the Sun Conference.
