Ave Maria University's women's softball team won the first game in school history at the AMU softball field Friday, beating Calumet College of St. Joseph, Ind., 4-3. The visiting Crimson Wave beat the Lady Gyrenes 8-1 in the nightcap.

Kaitlin Marotti (LaBelle, Fla.) tripled and singled with an RBI in the first game to back winning pitcher Angie Mullally (Grand Blanc, Mich.), who pitched five shutout innings. Mullally left after four innings with a 4-0 lead, then came back with the tying run at third base and no one out in the seventh and final inning to pitch out of the jam and save the win. Mullally also made a great shoestring catch in right field.

Marisa D'Ambrosio (Boerne, Texas) also had two hits and an RBI, and Lauren Nelson (Lake City, Fla.) scored two runs, and had a single and two walks for the Lady Gyrenes.

In the second game, Sarah Bronson (Cape Coral, Fla.) had two hits, including a double, and knocked in Chelsey Thompson (Jacksonville, Fla.), who had tripled, for the Lady Gyrenes' only run.

Ave Maria and Calumet play four more games at the AMU softball field on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
