Softball team wins 3 of 4 with scores of 13-5, 15-11, 6-2, and a loss of 12-1.

Led by Chelsey Thompson's 10 hits over four games and Janet Holtfreter's two complete-game pitching wins, Ave Maria University's Women's Softball Team took three of four games Saturday against Calumet College of St. Joseph, NAIA school from Indiana.

The Gyrenes ended up 4-2 in a season-opening six-game series at the AMU softball field.

The offensive explosion by Thompson (Jacksonville, Fla.) included two doubles and a triple with five RBIs, including a four-hit game in a wild 15-11 Gyrene win. Holtfreter (2-0) allowed just two earned runs in 13-5 and 6-2 wins. In the latter game, the Deerfield Beach, Fla., freshman allowed just three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Marisa D'Ambrosio (Boerne, Texas) and Sarah Bronson (Cape Coral, Fla.) each had two doubles among their six hits on the day, with D'Ambrosio knocking in three runs with a bases-loaded double.

Samantha Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) evened her pitching record at 1-1 with a win, while Angie Mullally (1-1) took the loss in AMU's lone Saturday defeat, 12-1, although none of the Crimson Wave runs off the Grand Blanc, Mich., sophomore were earned as the Lady Gyrenes' defense unraveled.

AMU begins a season-long 13-game road swing Tuesday when the Gyrenes play Polk State College in Lakeland.
