Ave Maria's softball team opened its first road trip Friday with a 3-0 loss to NAIA nationally ranked Warner University at the Royals' home field in Lake Wales as part of Warner's Early Bird Tournament.
The Gyrenes, 4-3, got a double from shortstop Chelsey Thompson (Jacksonville, Fla.), and catcher Sarah Bronson (Cape Coral) reached base three times getting hit by pitches. Ave Maria threatened in the later innings, most notably when Angie Mullally (Grand Blanc, Mich.) hit a long fly ball with two runners on and two out in the sixth, but it was caught in deep center to end the inning.
Samantha Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) took the loss in the pitchers' duel, allowing just four hits, to fall to 1-2 on the season. All three Warner runs were unearned.
Ave Maria was rained out of its scheduled second game Friday, and will resume tournament play at 9 a.m. Saturday against conference rival Webber International University at Webber. The Gyrenes then have a rematch with Warner and a third game against Baltimore County, Md., College.
