Ave Maria University's softball team got a combined no-hitter and a 1-hitter to sweep Baltimore County (Md.) College 12-0 and 13-0 to finish 2-2 in the final day of the Warner University Tournament at Lake Wales.
Samantha Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) and Janet Holtfreter (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) teamed to pitch the no-hitter with seven strikeouts and just one walk between them. Crews (2-3) got the win behind two hits from Marisa D'Ambrosio (Boerne, Texas), including a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double.
In the other game, Angie Mullally (Grand Blanc, Mich.) threw a complete-game 1-hitter, facing the minimum number of batters with no walks and three strikeouts. Erica Pfab (St. Augustine, Fla.), Megan Manos (Chattahootchee, Fla.) and Chelsey Thompson (Jacksonville, Fla.) tripled and Liz Baux (Scranton, Pa.) added two hits and scored two runs.
Earlier in the day, Ave Maria lost 5-0 to Webber International University and 10-2 to Warner University.
The Gyrenes, 6-5 on the season, visit Broward State College in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday.
