Men and Women Basketball Teams Suffer Losses

The Ave Maria University Men and Women Basketball Teams faced tough losses Saturday. The men fell to Madonna University 59-45, and the women lost 70-51 to the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.

Emily Huber led the Lady Gyrenes with 12 points and 3 assists. Saira Morgan, who recently was awarded The Sun Conference Champion of Character Award as a volleyball player, cashed in her first double-double of the season. She had 10 points and 10 rebounds while going 5-6 in field goals attempted. On the other end of the court Sonia Roman had 19 for Rio Piedras, and Amanda Nunez had 18. The player of the game was hands-down Rio Piedras' Shakira Rodriguez. She scored 17 points, and grabbed 10 boards to compliment her 7 assists.

The women are now 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. They will play Monday, November 23rd against the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon in a 4:30 p.m. home contest.

The men had their hands full against Madonna University who had made the trip from Michigan. At halftime, Madonna University was up by 1 at 24-23, but the Gyrenes were outplayed in the second half. They were outscored 35-22 in the second half to put the final score at 59-45.

Danny Vivas had 10 points and 4 assists for the Gyrenes. Marc Rozanski had 10 boards, 4 points, and 5 assists. Dylan Fugate and Chris Jordan scored 9 each. Leading the way for Madonna University was Ryan Waidmann. He went 7-9 from the field to score 18 points and had 7 rebounds. Kevin Henry had a stellar game at the point with 7 points, 10 boards, and 6 assists.

The men are now 3-1 overall and have yet to play a conference game. They will face off against Florida Institute of Technology in an away game at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
