Ave Maria University women’s basketball showed up for this afternoon’s USCAA National Championship game and proved why they had been carrying the number one ranking for what seemed like the entire season. The Lady Gyrenes pummeled Penn State Beaver 80-55 who was hoping for a Cinderella story ending.
The first half ended close as AMU went into the locker rooms with only a four point lead. The two teams exchanged three-point shots all the way up to the half way mark to keep things interesting. Lady Gyrene Head Coach Bob Batson said the right things to his team over the break as they came out and boosted their lead to 25 points by the end of the second 20 minutes.
The big scorer in the game was Emily Huber who turned in 27 points and hit 4 threes in the game. Sandy Jenkins fouled out with 7:30 left but still had a huge impact adding 15 points and 8 rebounds to the team totals. Cassie Krieger and Erin Murphy both had 11 points each while Amy Myler was one point off of a double-double with 9 points, 11 rebounds. Tamica Mora (6 points) and Teya Spooner-Serdar (1 point) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Gyrenes. Emily Huber was named the Tournament MVP, and Amy Myler made the All-Tournament Team.
Ave Maria University will proudly bring back to Ave Maria, Florida a National Title that was well deserved and well fought for over the course of a tough year.
