The Ave Maria University women’s soccer team started their season with a solid win. The 4-1 road victory over Johnson and Wales University has set the standard for the road ahead. The Lady Gyrenes scored three goals off of direct shots and a fourth from a corner kick that rattled around the Wildcat defense before crossing the goal line.

The first goal of the game was the own goal by Johnson and Wales in the 12th min, but the one that assured the win for AMU was struck around the 15 min mark by midfielder Beth Greve with an assist by Raquel Ledesma. The rest of the goals came in the second half from AMU’s Eliza Scarnecchia and Shawna Manchette. Natasha Solivan scored the lone Wildcat goal 25 minutes into the second half. Other assists in the match came from AMU’s Christine Mastandrea, and Mimi Syversen.

Beth Greve, co-captain of the Lady Gyrenes , said about their performance, “It’s our first game and we found out that we still have some things to work on, but our team showed the ability to keep possession throughout most of the game and come out with a win.” The win kick-started AMU’s record to 1-0 while Johnson and Wales fell to 0-3 overall.
